What Are Release Flags? (And Why They Matter Offshore)

In the world of offshore sportfishing, flags matter. They're not just colorful cloth fluttering in the wind — they’re a visual scoreboard, a captain’s signature, and a symbol of a crew’s success. If you know, you know.

Let’s break it down for those new to the game — and for the ones who already live it.

🚩 What Is a Release Flag?

A release flag is a small, colored pennant flown from the riggers of a sportfishing boat to signify what species of fish were caught (and often released) during a trip. Each species has its own flag, and there’s a long-standing tradition to display them after a successful day offshore.

They’re more than just tradition — they’re bragging rights.

Common Billfish Release Flags

Here are a few of the most iconic:

  • White Marlin – All-white marlin silhouette on a dark blue background

  • Blue Marlin – Blue silhouette on white background

  • Sailfish – Often a blue sail on white

  • Tuna, Wahoo, Dolphin (Mahi) – Each has its own version

Some boats even get custom flags made with their tournament numbers or boat names embroidered into them.

What Do the Flags Mean?

Each time a fish is caught and released (especially billfish), a crew hoists the corresponding flag. If it was released, the flag is typically flown upside down to honor the fish and show it was let go unharmed — a practice that promotes conservation and sportsmanship.

Why Drop 001 Was Inspired by the White Marlin Flag

Our first release — Drop 001: The White Marlin Release — is more than just a clean rope hat with embroidery.

It’s a wearable version of a white marlin release flag.

It represents:

  • The first marlin you ever released

  • The last day you raised three in the spread

  • That perfect calm morning when everything clicked

The crisp white embroidery on deep blue mirrors the flag flown by crews from the Bahamas to the Gulf. Whether you’re on deck, at the dock, or just daydreaming about your next run offshore — this hat tells the story.

🔥 Only 100 Made. No Restocks.

Just like a 5-flag day, Drop 001 won’t last forever. We made only 100 pieces. Once they’re gone, that’s it.
